Wk 5 – Artist Conversation – Katia Swihart

Katia Swihart is a CSULB student who’s going to graduate in Spring 2017. She compares herself to being a method actor, as she meditates and prepares herself by reflecting on her emotions and uses them to create. She creates with materials that are special to her.

Her work consists of stories of her years in fast food service, working as a daycare worker at a Jewish Center, ad the many times she moved during college. Her work are collages of things made by children, things from home, or things that remind her of her conflicts.

This image seems to be a collage of different materials and colors. There seems to be yarn mixed in with other fabrics. The different colors could represent confusion, without a definite color, this piece could represent her mixed emotions on he confused sexuality when she was younger.

This a frying pan with Jewish stars inside. The multiple stars of Davids are made up of Popsicle sticks (i think). This could be a nod to her Jewish heritage. The frying pan is representative of the event known as the Holocaust where millions of Jews were killed in torture chambers also known to fry.
