Wk 11 – Artist Conversation – Yujia Gu

Yujia Gu is a graduate in the process of getting her MFA degree in the Graphic design program. She had an art gallery called Tracing Gun Violence in America on April 12 2017.

Walking into the exhibit, one of the first things you notice are the silhouettes. There are red and black silhouettes of people and there are black silhouettes of guns. The guns are accompanied by words “to protect themselves more and more” and “are buying guns”. There is also a projector with a projected map on the wall. The map is of the United States and it shoes when and where gun violence is in the USA. There are also pictures and names of people who were victims of gun violence.

This gallery is to raise awareness to the issue of gun control. Yujia Gu believes that there is a constant loop of people buying guns. People buy guns to protect themselves from people who have bought guns. She believes that the more accessible guns are, the more likely that there will be more gun violence.

Looking at the statistics presented at her gallery were impactful. But she not only presented stats, she made her exhibit more personal by bringing in names and pictures of victims. The silhouettes of people and guns followed by the words bring about her belief of the pointless loop in a significant way. In conclusion, in she accomplished her goals of bringing awareness to this serious issue.
